Varies. I once listed my top 10 favorite albums which included stuff like Xenogears - Creid, Actraiser Symphonic Suite, Metroid Metal Varia, Smash Bros. Brawl, DKC2, Symphony of the Night, and Dracula Battle/Konami Shooting Battle. Now I have added Contra 4 Rocked 'n' Loaded. List of individual favorite tracks is on vgmdaily.wordpress.com

Not meant to troll, but Chocobo is one of my least favorite VGM songs (Ar Tonelico 2 gets the vote for worst) :AH:
The sleep of Reason produces monsters.

I won't list specific songs, but I love the music from the following series:

Metroid
Zelda
Mario
F-Zero
Halo has some epic tracks.
God of War has great music. One of the songs from God of War II comes to mind, there is a war horn blaring every so often in it and it really makes you feel like you're fighting an epic battle against the Olympians.
Resident Evil 4 and 5 had a few good songs (
the final boss fights against Saddler and Wesker had amazing theme music
)
Pokemon
Little Big Planet has an eclectic mix of songs, but most are good, or at the very least interesting.
Assassins Creed (specifically I love the song that plays when you leap from a Borgia Tower as you light it on fire)
Star Wars the Force Unleashed I had classic Star Wars songs, yes, but those mixed with the new songs and the theme were actually really good.
"I am tired of being under the weight of greedy men who don't believe in anything."

I love how in MP1 as you get deeper into each area the music changes from a quiet melody to an all-out riff that you can groove to. Tallon Overworld is my favorite. Pretty much all metroid music, f-zero, SMB3 music, plus some of the stuff from super mario bros wii, and a lot of the brawl songs.

From mp1 I love Tallon overworld, its so relaxing/atmospheric. Then later on in the game the music is more upbeat. especially phendrana's edge, my cousin who is 5 loves to dance to the music! XD
Currently playing: Metroid Prime Trilogy

Out of the 1000+ video games I have played for the past 25+ years, I think AQUARIA has the best music I have ever heard in a video game.

^Never heard of AQUARIA before. Looked it up on YouTube and discovered just why you'd say that. It does have a decent soundtrack.

Now, Xenoblade (tired of me talking about it yet?) has a fantastic soundtrack all around. One of the best parts about it is how some of the songs bring forth such a strong remembrance of great games of yore.

Take this one, for example:

In it, I get glimpses of Sonic, Mega Man, and Chrono Trigger/Cross. And there are probably others in there that I'm failing to hear. The entire soundtrack is absolutely incredible, and totally worth a listen.

Sabuta.1 from No More Heroes 2
Initial R from Biohazard Umbrella Chronicles
DooM Soundtrack
Quake II Soundtrack
Cerberus' Theme in Devil May Cry 3
The Happy Song in Alan Wake's American Nightmare

The Wild Arms series has the best music.

Critical Hit! - Wild Arms

Battle vs Lord Blazer - Wild Arms 2

Crossfire Sequence - Wild Arms 3

War Demon - Wild Arms Alter Code: F

At the End of the Wilderness Ver. Detonator - Wild Arms 4

Volsung XERD_3113 - Wild Arms 5

Intrude Upon Happiness, Plunder the Future - Wild Arms XF

This is just a fraction of the incredible songs the Wild Arms games have, and most of them aren't even my favorites, I'm just not in the mood to spend hours trying to figure out which songs I like the best.

The Donkey Kong Country series has some of the most thematic, atmospheric music I've ever heard in video games. Each track appropiately reflects the tone of the level you're playing. I think my favourite theme from the series is Donkey Kong Country 2's Stickerbrush Symphony.

And of course, the Metroid series. Its dark, moody, atmospheric tracks really add to the sense of isolation that the Metroid games are famous for. Plus, the recurring "Samus Aran's Appearance Fanfare" and "Item Acquisition Fanfare" are just so fangasmic.

David Wise was a machine. Just one amazing soundtrack after the other. If you like Stickerbrush Symphony you may want to listen to the redux version.

Speaking of over-achieving British game composers; my favorite game soundtrack is from a little known SNES platformer called Plok. The Follins brothers knocked it out of the park here. What's really crazy about Plok's soundtrack is that the SNES has 7 sound channels for music and these guys only used 5.

Here's the opening theme. Apparently Shigeru Miyamoto heard this and it blew his mind!
This is the beach level music.
Abandoned city level. (this song goes nearly 4 minutes and 30 seconds without looping, holy crap!)
This is the flea pit/creepy forest music:
Saving the best for last. Here's the boss theme. If you only click on one of these, make it this one!

What a great soundtrack. Fits the game's surreal art-style like a glove. (Also, how awesome is that box art?)

okey has shown some of the little bit of truly good taste in this thread-

anyone who appreciates the Follin bros., as I said, has truly good taste.
If you want more Follin, I recommend checking out his work from the computer era- ZX Spectrum, C64, Amiga... He was quite the genius.
Personal favorites being LED Storm, Ghouls n' Ghosts, and Chronos (amazing considering the extreme limitations of the ZX Spectrum Beeper soundchip!)

Follin and his bros couldn't make a bad piece of music if they tried!

I kind of held off posting in this topic here because A) I knew the responses would be kind of blase, and B) I knew I would totally hijack the thread because VGM is one of the few areas I truly shine with large [useless] knowledge.

Anyhoo, PART UNUS:

c64:

Best composers: Rob Hubbard, Jeroen Tel, Ben Daglish, Tim Follin

EX:
Rob Hubbard:
Monty on the Run
Quite possibly one of the best C64 tunes out there. Game was all right, but what really made it was the music. Rob Hubbard is the king (lol) of British composers, to me, anyhow.
Light Force
Here Rob gets a little fancy with his instrument use. Some nice phasing here and there- all really awesome.
Ace II
If you like bass at all, you owe it to yourself to listen.

Jeroen Tel:
I could post every C64 Tel song and still not begin to state my appreciation for this guy. Fucking GREAT use of the SID chip. One of the chip's finest users.
CYBERNOID
CYBERNOID 2
HAWKEYE
ROBOCOP 3

Each one of these songs is like a rock-concert blaring out of a 3-channel SID chip.

Listen to them, if you want to stop being lame.
It will also show without a doubt that the SID chip was a far more versatile chip than the NES (or ZX or Amiga or Atari ST's, for that matter) soundchip. But that goes without saying- a computer is always better in that regard. Just the nature of things (though Tim Follin once again pushes the NES to its limits in Solstice and Silver Surfer. Also check Journey to Silius for more non-Follin NES-greatness).

Ben Daglish:
Personal Favorite The Last Ninja.
Probably the best VGM ninja song ever, up until Ninja Gaiden's Basilisk Minefield stage.

Tim Follin:
Already posted Ghouls n' Ghosts, but here are some other gems:
Bionic Commando
not technically c64, but the ZX version is far superior (which is a rarity, I think, for the ZX- generally C64 sounds better)

Use this post, if you will, to discover the wide range of VG music you guys are just simply MISSING.

I mean, there are other composers out there whose names don't end in Kondo, Uematsu, or Yamamoto.

In no particular order (not necessarily the ones I think are best, but rather the ones I like listening to the most):

Super Metroid Brinstar Overgrown With Vegetation
Super Metroid Brinstar Ending Theme
Metroid II Caves Theme 1
Metroid Prime Prologue
Mario Kar Wii Credits 2
Mario Kar Wii Moo Moo Meadows (guilty pleasure ;) )
Metal Gear Solid 2 Theme
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Molgera Theme
The Legend of Zelda (most of them) Hyrule Overworld Theme
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Credits
