Hairpin

Is MBs hairpin suppose to represent the core of a metroid or is it insignificant or something else?

It looks like the core of a Metroid yeah, but I don't think it has any significance. Unless you go by the end blocks on the main menu which could indicate her surrogate mommy and daddy.

Well, it does have symbolic significance, but that's a bout it.

It is supposed to give the ever stupid >_< a little bit of a hint at her true identity, if she can even figure it out. It's Metroid nuclei.

To me it seemed to represent her sanity. When she was first created, Madeline gave her it. But, when she is being taken away, it flies off, leading to her crazed attack on everyone else.

Indeed it was of some significance. It did show her sanity. Because in the scene with Madeline, it shows that she gave her the pin, and it made her happy. When she released it, she was crazed with hate.

They mention the hairpin in the concept art. It was designed to look like a little girl's hairpin. I don't think there's anything special about it or that it was meant to look like a Metroid.

The shape was obviously intentional. they could have gone with any shape, but they chose the triple nuclei because she interacts with metroids.

Although, interestingly enough metroids actually have 4 nuclei.

My guess is that it expresses here relationship with Madeline and her human-like nature. It could also symbolize her bond with the Metroids, but I think they just made it look like that because it is purty.

Everybody always assumes that MB's hairclip makes her sane around Madeline.

The hairclip was just to help MB feel more human, along with the name Melissa. It means nothing. Her sensors must have indicated that there were others in the room, and her gasp made her lose her hairclip, so she didn't remove it, and then she pushed Madeline out of the freeze bullet's way. She then tossed her freeze gun to her adoptive mother to either make Madeline protect her from the Federation, or help her be destroyed to avoid falling into their hands.
