Metroid II for 3DS Virtual Console

Postby CapCom » 11.24.11 12:05pm

So... Is anyone picking this up? I'm considering it, even though I have like four copies of the game (two Japanese carts, the original, and the Greatest Hits).

Emulator? You'd rather play on an emulator than Virtual Console? You sick, sick man. And you call yourself a Metroid collector, too!

:P

I'll get mine when I have time to play it. Probably January.

*Harley Quinn voice*I GOT IT! I GOT IT!*end Harley Quinn voice*

So I now have it for VBA, the actual cartridge (which I bought from a store in a small town after bribing my father) and now 3DS. Yay!

Well, I checked out the store. They've got a nice little description of it (though some of the text is a little wacky...). There's three screenshots (showing the last boss, of course... o_O) and a video with some nice footage. $3.99 too...

How's it play? I know the circle pad made playing Metroid pretty worthless...

I figure I'll have to get it sooner or later to do a review, as much as I'd rather not buy yet ANOTHER copy... Right now, I think if you already have the game, the only reason to get it would be if your battery is dead (both my Japanese copies have corrupted data, but I have yet to test if the save files actually work).

Emu is way better than console for some of the metroid games, esp when there are patches which improve graphics and colors - not to mention full rom hacks.

But then you're playing a ROM hack, not the game itself. For those of us who weren't around in 1991 to get the game on a big Game Boy, Virtual Console is the way to go.

:-? what does me having to play a metroid game with an EMU have to do anything with my collecting?
Do you have some vendetta against EMU or are you just trying to promote VC?
Besides, whats the point of collecting virtual games? They aren't tangible, therefore aren't worth anything. Its virtual... >_>

Any real Metroid collector would try to get every game in all forms they can, even virtual. :P

And it's a little bit of both. I'm no big fan of emulation, and I do think Virtual Console is a great idea and should be supported.

I'm just teasing you, by the way. ;)

That's kind of ironic, because the Virtual Console IS emulation! XD

Anyway, who's emulation is better is kind of redundant - one's official, the other's not. The unofficial emulation will also have more bells and whistles than the official because Nintendo is specifying how you will play their games. That's all there is, and it's really off-topic.

More on-topic would be how it plays on 3DS :)

I was going to get it just to give a donation to say that metroid was still popular, but then I saw it wasn't even in color. Even my old cartridge can be played in color, so I'm not sure why they insist on putting it out in the greenish-peeish background with only black and grey colors.
I haven't played it that way since it was new, and I really have no desire to play it that way again.

Yeah, so I got a copy. It's in black and white and MUCH cleaner than an original GB or Pocket can produce. Actually, it's FAR cleaner than even the SP. You can't get the game to display this good in black and white unless maybe on the GB Player or emulator (and even then, the 3DS screen is really good). But yeah, lack of color functionality is a big minus for GB emulation. They could have very easily implemented it as an option. I think they made the VC just like 'This is how the GB was meant to be.' It would just be like Nitnendo to charge for color functionality...

The audio I think is the biggest jump - it's in stereo the GB output in that actually, but the console has a mono speaker so you could only hear it with headphones. You can really tell where the sound channels were blocked out due to SFX overload (like during the earthquakes).

The analog stick is ok to control for the most part, but it is simply not accurate enough when you are using Spider Ball (which was a pain to use in the original). Basically, if you roll into a corner and Spider Ball, you have to be VERY precise with the analog stick to get rolling anywhere. It also does feel a bit unnatural if you've just played with the D-pad. D-pad though is not balanced with the analog stick, so it's more tiring on the thumb. Actually, the ABXY buttons are a little small and hard, so that will wear your hands out, too! Lastly, and worst, the placement of the Start button as JUST Start is a pain - it's too far away from your right thumb to be of any use, and you kind of need it to save. Breaks concentration to use that function, so that's a minus. Thankfully, Select was set to Y, but I don't see why they couldn't have let you change the button mapping or made X Start...

Emulation is pretty much 100%, though I have to verify the audio via line-in recordings and compare it with my other recording tests (as well as emulation). It's got a save state functionality - just one save, can load as many times as needed though, so it's great for saving before bosses or a hard part. Nintendo at least knows how gaming has changed!

Oh yeah, the game is $3.99 plus 16 cents tax. And you can't pay JUST $4.15, like all the other services (except Steam!) you have to buy credits in amounts of $5, $10, $20, or $50. Having 85 cents floating around in Nintendo's bank doesn't make me very happy. At least I am still interested in X-Scape.

I bought it as soon as it was put up, in the midst of my turkey cooking. I can play it on my gameboy if I really want to, but its a lot more convenient to have it on my DS. Metroid 2 is probably one of my favorites, and I've ONLY PLAYED IT ONCE... which is silly considering I've replayed a lot of other Metroid games. I really wanted to replay this game, and I think that few dollars was totally worth it.

Last of the big spenders!? :) Just be happy in the knowledge that the interest that Nintendo is making on your 85 cents is probably going to be funding the development of the next Metroid game :/

Good review by the way.
