Re: The Official "Samus & Joey" Manga ThreadChapter 6 is up.
http://metroid-database.com/manga/?vid=24&cid=103 We get to see Joey's mom (and find out his last name). As I said in the news post, Vol. 2 is like 10 times better than the first. Joey develops into a character who isn't annoying, and the new enemies are pretty awesome. Yes, more and better character development for Joey than all of Other M. You will actually pity the guy by the end. Anyway, trying some new experiments with translation and typesetting. We're not inserting SFX into every single scene because it either looks stupid or is too much work to get to not look stupid. SFX is added only when it's easy to add or is very important. First experiment is to add a stroke around text that penetrates the border of a text bubble just barely. Instead of making the font super teeny tiny, it just exits the bubble a little. Second experiment is to translate some psychomemes. Psychomemes are basically onomotopoeia for psychological states or atmospheric moods and are unique to Japanese (and used all over the place! They have SFX for smells, too!). So for instance, on Page 18, the Junk Hawk is getting sucked into the demon planet, and the Japanese SFX (GO-GO-GO!) denotes a menacing atmosphere. In keeping with the goofy nature of the comic, I used the standard 'uh-oh' music. http://metroid-database.com/manga/samus ... H6_017.png http://metroid-database.com/manga/samus ... H6_017.png In this other instance, the same SFX is used, but in a different context. I think this one turned out quite nicely! http://metroid-database.com/manga/samus ... Re: The Official "Samus & Joey" Manga ThreadI am not able to read it.
I can't get manga pages to work at all on the site. I have both Adblock and Noscript opened up for it, and still nothing. It acts like it is going to load up a page, and then boots back out. when I click zoom in, the page just dims and nothing else. |

Re: The Official "Samus & Joey" Manga ThreadChapter 7 now up!
http://metroid-database.com/manga/?vid= ... #manga_top I had a lot of fun translating this one, and the next chapter gets even better! There's a neat cameo from Joey's dad, and the new monsters are so ridiculous, they're awesome! I translated the SFX to match. Also, reading through Volume 3 now, and the events of this episode seem like they will be pretty important halfway through! The sleep of Reason produces monsters.

Re: The Official "Samus & Joey" Manga ThreadI must admit, I thought this would be a dumb story at first, but it actually isn't too bad at all, it's actually a decent read, enough for me to check out what happens next. It also has good parts of Samus blowing things up, so that's a plus!

Re: The Official "Samus & Joey" Manga ThreadMaybe I'm looking too hard at this...
But since Joey idolizes Samus and sees her as this great man that he wants to grow up to be like, is it possible Samus is deliberately hiding truth behind her helmet to him and the ignorant villagers/troops/etc? |

Re: The Official "Samus & Joey" Manga ThreadI think it has to do with the power of hiding her identity. Nobody knows who Samus is, just that she's this badass bounty hunter. That mystique and enigma allows her to remain safe: she's famous throughout the galaxy, but nobody knows who she really is, so nobody can blackmail her or find her weaknesses. There's been other speculation as well that nobody would have respected Samus when she first started if they knew she was a woman.
The whole secret identity goes back to the original game. Nobody knew who Samus was, and the game promised that if you beat it - or at least were good enough at it - you would find out. It enticed people to see the ending. There's not much of that mystique left now, of course, particularly after Other M. Samus is still an enigma to most other people in her universe though, such as the GFed Marines, who equate her with Santa Claus and Bigfoot. On the other hand, the Pirates know who she is, but treat her as the Hunter, a mystical warrior that causes Space Pirate kids to wet their beds at night. The sleep of Reason produces monsters.
