Metroid NES! Anyone still play it?

Postby superhuman7 » 03.17.12 6:59pm

It is afterall a classic, and has several ports, including the recent and constant one on the Nintendo virtual console. So does anyone still try to make it through the hell run of a game?

Haven't played it in a while. I do see myself playing it again sometime in the future though.

I actually tend to play it once or twice a year, for shits and giggles.

And with the wonderful MDBtroid hack, you all should too!

It has a bit better pacing and atmosphere than Zero Mission, I'd say; plus, it doesn't have a boring Zero Suit section, so it always keeps things nice and moving.

I think I can beat the game in about an hour, roughly. But it's still fun to do all the cool tricks, like getting the Varia Suit as soon as I get the bombs, beating Ridley first, etc.

YES and I LOVE IT!! :D I've been trying to get better endings each time. The first time I played, even after dying several times and taking like 800 tries to beat Mother Brain I still got the fourth ending, where I beat it in less than 10 hours but more than 5, where she holds up her fist in victory. After that I was consistently getting the ending where she takes off her helmet (3-5 hours). A month ago I finally got the ending where she's in the leotard. :) (Less than three, more than one hour.)

It was pretty difficult until my husband who was watching me play had the genius idea of going back after I took out the Zebetites and killing more Metroids to refill my health! Someone got *rewarded* that night! LOL ;)

Sadly he's not a Metroid guy yet. But there is hope for him since he played more than half of Super Metroid and said he likes it. He didn't much care for the NES version. He said "all the levels look the same" which is true but to each their own I guess and he did say he would play Zero Mission instead.

The NES version is a classic. It's the game that started it all and deserves attention for that alone. But in other aspects it has a high value of re-playability.
It's IMO one of the best versions of the game.
I always beat it under 3 hours and get the "best" ending.

But then there are some special codes you can type in, to play without the Varia suit and stuff. The legendary Justin Bailey one.

I play it every once in a while. I never did understand why some people think it's hard. It has the simplest map, and requires nothing special to get the best ending. You just go straight to screw attack, then jump through everything in your path, including bosses. It gives you so many energy tanks that you can't even carry them all, and missiles are useless until the end of the game (excluding red doors, of course). The only thing that I think might be considered tough is the very beginning when you only have 30 health, but the solution is exceedingly simple - don't get hurt!

Wow, I wish I could see it that way :) I got it for Wii Virtual Console yesterday and have found it very challenging. In fact, I played it a few times before but never got very far because you get hit hard and pickups are few and far between you know? And despite knowing the passwords, I just cannot bring myself to cheat - the others took a while to get through but they all felt so rewarding when you complete them. I think the first one is the hardest I've ever played - but when you explain it that way, it seems so simple :D

These are among the most unforgiving games though, but I can't help but love them for it :awesome:

I've never used a single password in this game. I'm a firm believer in "Practice makes perfect". I pretty much run through and grab all of the suit upgrades and grab the bare minimum of missiles (aka the quickest ones to get to) and of course Kraid and Ridley give you about 50 missiles each, and I get 6 energy tanks including the ones from :kraid: and :ridley: . You really only need maybe 50 missiles to kill Mother Brain (on the high side) if you are careful and take your time. Also, what really helps me is that I go through and destroy the Zebetites, then I go back and kill more Metroids to refill my health and missiles so I'm at full power when I get to MB. I think it's really easy if you put your mind to it. I've been playing for just over a year and I've almost mastered it. Just last week I beat it in just barely over an hour. I'm also a typical 25 year old stay at home mom and housewife... It can be done! :)

Odd question: Apparently if you beat the game in under 3 hours, you start over in the Justin Bailey outfit. That's happened to me each time I beat it in under 3 hours. Has that always been the case or is that exclusive to the VC version?

I don't know what the time to beat is, but the original game did let you play as justin bailey samus.

I actually remember the day my friends and I found out samus was female. One of us had finally beaten the game that fast and had come to school telling everyone about it. We all thought he was lying, and that there was no way that samus was female. We purposely got on the wrong bus that day so we could go to his house and see if he was telling the truth. We were in total shock. That was 25 freakin' years ago! I was 13. (I'm so old. It sucks.)

In hindsight, that's probably why I don't find the game to be hard. I scarcely remember what the difficulty seemed like back when the game was new. However, when I play games from that era that I haven't played before, they often seem very hard to me. I think I just have it hard wired into my memory after playing it so many times.

This will totally reveal how much of a Metroid noob I am, but I found out Samus was a woman two years ago through Super Smash Bros Brawl. In my defense I haven't been playing games for long but I guess I'd like to say that I picked up on the Metroid games pretty quickly.
