Food for Thought; Different Perspective of Other M

Postby Hawk's Eye » 03.21.12 12:51am

OK i know I've been dead for quite sometime, so i thought I'd come back with a little bang! Anyway i stumbled upon this little article on tumblr that someone made interpreting Other M differently. I know you'll read and say wow that was dumb or Other M is what it is.

But because Other M was so way out in left field compared to the other games, this could be something to think about. Oh and some things in here are good points and others are opinions. Anyway, lets discuss!!!

Here's the link.

That was a very entertaining read. This'll fit nicely into my headcanon :P

Pretty sure this "theory" is just an attempt to make fun of Other M even more.

And for that? It's actually pretty entertaining. I can't fathom for a second that this is a serious theory.

Im confused...i think this is decently serious. I mean Other M was out of place so it could be true.... why does no one think this makes sense..

It is a stretch. Personally I like the theory and considering how out of place Other M was, I thought "heh, why not? Makes more sense than Other M's story for sure".
Both interesting and entertaining. Part of why it's funny is how it's all connected to the characteristics of a dreams. I definitely give it a thumbs up.

If Other M were a romp through Samus' psyche I think that'd make her characterization even worse. I mean, if she's so emotionless and detached in her own head, then just imagine how boring a person she'd likely be in real life.

Considering how the story couldn't even wrap up the 'Deleter' sub plot or how every story point is revealed mostly through straight forward exposition via monolog, do you really think Sakamoto was capable of pulling this kind of fast one on the fans.

I mean, I can forgive Sakamoto for not being a great storyteller (most people in the video game industry aren't), but this is giving him a little too much credit, don't you think?

Ah thank you Remnants, thats what i was gettin at.

Well, rondus...i agree Sakamoto isn't a great enough story teller but i mean, interpreting Other M to a dream i think is a decent idea because Other M had so many inconsistencies with other games that it makes a bit of sense.

Well, yeah, you're completely right, but something tells me that wasn't intentional. :P

Basically my problem with this is we'll just have to revise this theory or come up with a new one the next time we get a new Metroid game that treats Other M like it really happened.

Saying that "it was just a dream all along" isn't exactly... complimenting Other M's plot.

It's like how people argue that Alien3 and Alien 4 should just be dreams that happened after Aliens - not exactly compliments to the stories in those movies (and in Alien 4 they are totally justified because that movie is balls).

"It was all just a dream." is generally a cop out used to return the story to it's status quo and as such is more an admission on behalf of the author that his/her story sucked and we'd all be better off just forgetting it. Not so much a compliment as a backhanded insult. Seeing as how Sakamoto intended MO:M's story to be of great importance, this whole theory is thus highly unlikely. We'll just have to come to terms with the fact that it was a thoroughly poorly written game and hope, or I suppose pray, that Nintendo can handle things better next time. Assuming, of course, that there is a next time.

Other M wasn't a dream.

It was an unlicensed movie based off vague details of her life.

true i suppose....I kinda wish it was slightly serious..I mean it would be interesting to imagine..I suppose I was more playing off the "What if" factor.

I know it's a general cop-out. i suppose i just didn't really like Other M very much but at the same time i did and i think there was more to it. part of it is bad story telling and the few things that could be fixed but i was merely pointing out- oh man I'm sorry. I'll be back later. My thoughts are messy right now. x_x

Wait, so this is a generally serious theory?

Sorry, but I don't really buy it. Maybe because of the wording in some areas, but it really does sound to me that this dude wrote this to poke fun of the game's plot through the guise of a "theory." Like "man, Other M story was so bad - wait, by golly, I think I got it! The storywriter is actually a genius! It must've all been a clever psychotic dream! No way is this game's story that retarded!"

With that said, if this is a serious theory then its still awful. As everyone already pointed out, the whole "it was all a dream" thing is just a clever (not really) way to try to excuse the storywriter and give him more credit then he deserves.

But whatever, I still found it pretty entertaining and laughed at various lines in the "theory". Also:

This a thousand times. It would be awful if this was actually true.
