So freaking close!!!

Postby DarkPhazonElite » 04.06.12 9:06pm

Yeah, I just finished my "speed run" of Super Metroid and my time was 3:07!!!! >_< My very first time to attempt a speed run, no walkthroughs or anything! I had 64% completion. I finished with 8 energy tanks, 2 reserves, 130 missiles, 10 Supers (30 max), and 20 power bombs. I did not bother to get the spring ball. I guess I'm pretty proud of myself but I wish I wasn't over by 7 minutes. I just want to get the best ending and I know I need to tweak my playthru to shave a good ten or so minutes off. How many tries did it take you all to finally get the best ending? I didn't want to necrobump any threads but I'd like some tips if at all possible! Also how the heck do ya'll manage a 100% speedrun? That seems insane! O_O

Basically getting a 100% speedrun for me came with playing the game so many times that I remember where all the hidden items are and which path is the most effective to grab them without going too far out of the way. It helps that there are multiple ways around Zebes. :3 Especially with Brinstar in the middle having four distinct ways out, three of which go to Crateria.

As far as how long it took me to get there? I couldn't give you an actual timeline or anything, since it's been around fifteen years since, but it took a few plays to get there. I'd say that 3:07 is really good for a first time trying to speedrun.

Thank you! :) I guess I need to play more often since I've only played this for the first time last January...I'm playing the games in chronological order right now and I'm on MP3. I'll try for under 3 hours once I get to SM. My 2 year old is always asking me to play Super Metroid so I get a lot of chances to do so... XD :P I actually got under 3 hours in NES Metroid a couple of months ago, but that's much easier to do! :)

Dont push yourself too much, relax am try to think the full planet map,and the fastest paths to get the itens, that is the secret
Of course for first time 3:07 is a great time.If you keep trying you maybe get 100% in less than 1:50 hour,my best was 1:41, and that isn't too difficult if you follow some sugestions like i told you before.

Think(and draw if you feel better)of all map area that you know
Analises the fastest paths to get the itens
Some Sequence Breaks will help, but don't really need that
Kill only the enemies in your way, don't waste time killing all enemies you see
Don't forget your game on without pause xD
And be confident

I will try someday beat my record
If i was in Metroid universe, i would marry Samus, and if i could choose an ability,Speed Booster would be mine. Finally i got all ending pictures,Metroid Fusion JP Version Completed

Heh, thanks! :) Yeah, I try too hard sometimes and I do try to kill a lot of enemies that I see. I just need to rethink how I played this time and see what I can do better. Now I know where the first power bomb expansion is, that will help a lot! I think studying a map wouldn't be a bad idea for me. I also think I will try to keep my power bomb pickups to a minimum, maybe 10.

Honestly, I tend to kill everything in sight and I'm very OCD about keeping my energy and missiles at max, and I still can get a 100% completion under 3 hours. :)

Well don't you just poop Super Duper Metroid Player rainbows, Tianna? XD I kid. That's awesome that you can do it. :awesome: Maybe one of these days I will too. For now I'm aiming for strictly a good run time with whatever completion rate I end up with. :) I still feel completely cheated that I never really played a Metroid game until New Year's Eve 2010-2011. :( I totally blame my dad and ex stepmom for that one. I've been a gamer for maybe 6 years? :P Ha, they tried to keep me from playing video games while growing up and look what happened... XD <3

Would you like to know how to do 100% in 2 hours or less?

Lol, I was trying to encourage you because I'm sucktastic compared to some of the guys here. I can't machball or recharge the shinespark on angled paths or even infinite bomb jump consistently. All I really have going for me is that I've played through the game more times than I can remember (it's in my top five favorite games ever, and probably the one I have replayed the most) and I've been playing it for 15 or more years. I'm actually pretty impressed that your first shot at a speed run was that fast. :D My first time speed-running was still over five hours. My first time playing through the whole game at all took me nearly 24 hours. (I got lost a lot. :awesome: )

Hey, I appreciate it the encouragement! :D Thanks again! I admit I have consulted a walkthrough and a map a few times (yay for internet! :P ) I still have a hard time getting 100% even when not speedrunning! Time to check a map. I know, I'm kind of a cheapskate, but I'm not a patient person! I get stuck, I look up a guide. lol I can get 98% in about 6 hours give or take, without a map. It's those last two Missile expansions that I can't seem to find. :(

As for all of those tricks, there's no way I can do it right now! I'm not even sure what "mockball" is and I can do the shinespark recharge in Zero Mission but I'm not too sure it's the same in Super...as for bomb jumping...yeah I can only do it remotely well in Prime.

I've been brushing back up on my Super Metroid technique recently, I'm glad to initiate another speedrunner. :)

As for the walkthrough and map, SO DID I!!!!! (My second playthrough at least.) That was my first 100% run, and I just kept practicing until I engraved all the item locations in my head. (Even after so long, they still are. I can still get 100% from memory.) Walkthroughs and maps are great teaching tools.

I don't know mockball either (it's a trick to use dash/Speed Booster in Morph Ball mode), and even if I did I'd refuse. (I do not abuse glitches.) Do you know how to single-wall jump? Shinespark? Airmorph? These can help you snatch all the items, and do so in a more efficient route.

I'm going to edit this post soon with a map. I'm going to mark that map with all the items, and I'm going to number them in the order that I, personally, always grab them in.

Good luck on your speedrunning, Rinoa. :D

My first time through, I got stuck in lower Brinstar and couldn't figure out how to get anywhere right around the elevator to Norfair without IBJs, so I ended up forking out the $13 of my allowance to order the player's guide from Nintendo. I referenced the hell out of the thing until I pretty much had it memorized. (The thing is really falling apart just from use. Lol.) I didn't have Gamefaqs back then. Gamefaqs has become awesome because it's free.

Ooh, single-wall walljumping is another thing I never got the hang of. Though I doubt that machball is a glitch, really. I can only to IBJs if I button mash. Never got the hang of the methods that a lot of the guys here have told me, so I just mash the bomb button and find what rhythm works and hope I don't screw it up. Hahaha.

But awesome on Thunder coming with a map, since I'm lame and I couldn't exactly explain how I go about doing it. It's one of those things that I just do it. But I agree, good luck with your speed run! :D

That's exactly why I came up with said map. Too bad I couldn't have had a continuous line running through showing the route, and I didn't tell her how exactly to get each item in that specific way (part of the fun! :D ) so marking the item order should put her on the right track.

I'm going to record a video of my playing once I've knocked all the rust off my playing. Gotta get those damned times down.

OMG Thunder, you are awesome!! Thanks!!! :awesome:

Mockball...I can do that in ZM. I got 100% in that game so I can do all of those tricks in that game, I just wonder how easily I can do them in SM....I can sort of do air morph balls and I can shinespark pretty well. As for single wall jumping I have not mastered that. I can do it on grapple walls, but not normal walls yet... I'll have to try this stuff soon and practice! LOL Right now I'm working on MP3. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who uses guides! :)

You're very welcome, Rinoa...and USED to use guides. That's the key. I'm to the point where I know from memory where they are.
