And it's not like Nintendo kills a franchise every time a game doesn't do so well. There will certainly be more Metroid for us to play.
Yeah, but the problem is that Metroid titles virtually NEVER do so well. That GameTrailers retrospective may have had a lot of issues, but it was right about one point: while far from being a flop, the series never achieves commercial success to match its critical acclaim & fans’ passion. Even Super struggled. If I remember correctly, there was one exception... the 1st Prime, I think? If so, I think the most likely scenario would be for Nintendo to remake that( maybe with some extras... Kraid anyone?) & see how well it sells in order to gauge whether they want to make an all-new Metroid. ...What’s Grezzo been up to since LoZ:OoT3D & LoZ:FSAE, anyway?

That's kinda my point. Metroid has been selling barely acceptable numbers for twenty five years. I don't think that's going to change anytime soon and I don't think now is the time when they'll decide to stop making 'em.

They've been costing more and more to make though, and less people have been buying them. It also takes a lot more people to make a video game now.
Like, why would Nintendo greenlight an HD Metroid if they know it's not going to sell well? Or why would they do something like put Retro back on the series?

We are getting way OT here... I tried to bring it back around to handheld stuff in my last post, but... Naner wrote:Metroid has been selling barely acceptable numbers for twenty five years. Why devote time, resources, & money to something that will sell acceptably when you could make a smash hit instead? Even if we as fans would be happy with Metroid becoming just the thing Nintendo makes to prevent fans from burning out on Mario, Zelda, & Pokémon, which I doubt; the eShop would be the death of such a franchise. The opportunity to test out new IPs as cheaper-to-produce downloadables & gauge whether they can carry a retail release( e.g. Pokémon Rumble) means Nintendo no longer needs to rely on Metroid to maintain interim profitability between Big 3 releases. Not to mention the stunning revival of sister series Kid Icarus( although, it might be an interesting reversal to see a Hunters sequel with mixed flight & ground sequences running on the KI:U engine, since the first 2 KI games ran on Metroid engines).

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was just confirmed. Coming out in August in Japan and Europe. Also, firmware update coming out next Wednesday, with support for folders on the HOME menu and game patches. Mario Kart 7 has a confirmed patch coming. Pokédex 3D will also receive a (paid) upgrade soon, featuring all Pokémon and more detailed information. There's also an AR-centric Pokémon game coming to the eShop.

Or they could hire our to valve. I mean at this point it would be cost effective and I KNOW Valve would love to mess with Metroid. I can dream can't I? On a side note at least Crysis 3 is coming soon so my supersuit craving is satisfied. Still I was only going to by a 3DS for Metroid then get all the good games. But if this is not happening.... I think my money is better spent for another GPU.

.....why does every single Nintendo product in history have to be a "smash hit" to justify it's existence? This goes not just for Metroid but for a lot of franchises. Why make 3D Mario when it doesn't sell anywhere near as much as 2D Mario? Why revive Kid Icarus after 20 years when there's no guarantee of any demand outside of hardcore Nintendo enthusiasts? Why make a new Pikmin on an HD console (with all the added development cost that entails) when the first two games failed to break out in sales? If they operated under that mentality, then we'd get literally nothing but New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Smash Bros and Pokemon games because these franchises vastly outsell all other Nintendo software... and that would be a very dull and barren gaming landscape. Nintendo hasn't even explored all avenues when it comes to Metroid's future. Fans (including me) have been asking for a brand new, non-remake 2D Metroid for many years before Other M even began production. Nintendo should try delivering that and seeing what happens before deciding if they want to shelve the franchise. On-topic, I like the Joel McHale video. Quite frankly, they should just make him the new Nintendo spokesperson (Reggie and his lame half-answers aren't cutting it anymore); he did a better job of selling the 3DS than any previous piece of marketing I've seen.

Why is there so little content on the US eShop? Japan and Europe seem to get all the good stuff.

Nah, it's not too different. We still have some things the Europeans don't (like Mutant Mudds, that only comes out next month for them), and of course the Japanese one has more stuff... I agree it's been slow lately, but there'll be more great things to come on it.

VVVVVV is out on the EU eShop. I'm not sure if it's already out on the US one.
It's worth it though.

It's worth it on PC.
I don't recommend playing VVVVVV on something that you can throw. That game gets sadistic.

Any other handheld and that would be a valid concern. This is Nintendo we're talking about though. But seriously, yeah. The same thing applies for the 3DS and PC versions of VVVVVV, you've got to learn when to take a step back and have a break before you decide to destroy something expensive.

Think VVVVVV is hard? This is coming to Wii U:
(However, I do agree it's not as elegantly hard as VVVVVV)

Besides a new Harvest Moon coming out in June suddenly things are looking a bit quiet on 3DS?
Dunno if to pick up Mario Kart or not though. Not interested in Kid Icarus and the Metal Gear Solid demo was pants.
