Any tips on recording VG audio ?

Postby Jeff Aran » 04.20.12 7:04pm

I was wondering if anyone could give some tips on recording (just audio) off of videogames. I tried to rip the audio tracks off of the disc itself but ran into too many snags. So I bought some AV stereo cables and have been hooking my console to my stereo microphone port. Then I just record while playing and edit as I go. The quality isn't so bad but I would like to push for more. My PC's sound card can dish out Hi-Def but can only record in stereo. I am looking into upgrading that some day.

I have a lot of time at work to listen to my mp3 and I've been getting really bored of my music lately. Just for fun , I've recording all the cutscenes and codec calls from MGS1. So listening to MGS1 at work has been alotta fun. I might extend this to more games but thought I should check for a better method to get the best quality.

To be honest, ripping the music directly from the source itself always is the best option. Hooking up a console and recording the output tends to give less than premium quality.

The best method of ripping depends on the console/disc type. It might help if you fill us in on that.

I might be able to rip some ps1 titles. I am interested in ripping some newer ps3 and Wii titles - but right now I havent found any programs to do that.

Some old NES and SNES would be nice but I think I'm screwed on those because they are cartridge instead of discs.

I think it might be easier for the cartridge games to record the audio and run it through filter apps.

Thanks in advance for any help with these :creature:

It is easy to rip the raw sound data out of NES and SNES roms, and there are many programs to convert that directly to a more suitable format.
