WIth the super Metroid ending, she was getting damage all over to the most protected parts of her suit because it was at the front and major organs are there so therefore armor is stronger.
I agree with IE. A more logical explanation would take material that's already existing there. What makes the most sense to me is that her concentration was already weakened by the sight of the baby Metroid, which probably would have been very shocking. My guess is they felt a sudden and violent attack at that moment would have done it. Still, doesn't make the scene any better. Or maybe was just a REALLY REALLY bad shot Anyway, bottom line is it's pretty badly written. So I don't think a story that's badly written, even if it is for a popular series, is worth a great deal of analysis. This is what they intended. If it doesn't make sense, then that part obviously wasn't done very well.

Would either treat the story with the same enthusiasm as most of us, and make a more adult/serious narrative. I do not mean a mature rated game with tits, ass, and gore either. I can agree that the plot was very poorly executed. However I refuse to let this small problem ruin how much fun other M is, even more so, this will not ruin Metroid or Samus for me. I do hope they keep changing, and experimenting with the games in the future.
The plot for Metroid will always be a vague interpretation of what existed before this game...I already knew Adam was going to die.
I suppose for me it is no different than "Han shot first."
I Thought about getting upset, but I have no power to change the plot, all I feel I can do is dismiss it and hope for something better. I agree with this. I definitely want to see something better story-wise, but everything else in the game was really good in my opinion. I'd personally rather not pick it apart anymore and just enjoy the game for what it is, which is a really awesome, fun game with a mediocre storyline.

That's my quote.............. And IE it's a bit of an excuse...but your point isn't very truthful either. It's your assumption based on how you perceived it as well. So don't me lol jk

How does the story work out in Japanese. Maybe it's just another case of poor localization?

Honestly, considering how awkward the script sounds in English, I am led to believe that the translation was fairly direct. This seems to be confirmed given 's insistence on the story being identical for all versions.

From what I have heard, the stories are the same. Sakamoto was indeed closely involved with the localization, and insisted they translate it as 'the baby'. If you recall, Super Metroid and Fusion both refer to the hatchling as 'the baby'. It's always been like that in Japan, but the localization team back in 1993 changed it. Maybe when I'm done with this project I'll read over the in-game text and do a new translation.

If we could hack Other M with the Japanese dialogue and give it new subs, I'd be totally down for a project like that.

Yeah, I think there were definitely some things that didn't translate well between cultures. Sakamoto-san made it pretty clear that Other M was mostly for the Japanese fans, right? I mean, he was hoping to increase the fanbase there, or something?
Dialog is easily fixable, but concepts would be more difficult without recreating the whole game. For instance, as I understand it, respect for one's authorities and elders is fairly well instilled in Japanese culture, while here in the states it's all "fight the power" and "stick it to the man" and "be your own boss".

I have a theory about the whole "suit deactivation" scene. It's not any kind of excuse, but maybe just a possibility as to how the suit was deactivated. It didn't look like any kind of ice beam to me, it looked electromagnetic. A beam that could disrupt her suit. Hear me out. Her suit is computerized, I believe. (Please don't get mad if I use Prime in my theory!) I remember the Rezbits from MP2. They blasted you and you had to reboot all of your power-ups. I'm thinking maybe it was something similar that Adam fired at Samus, although in a more concentrated form. I'm totally going out on a limb here, and I'm in no way trying to excuse the scene, since Rondus had earlier presented some very good points about why it was dumb for Adam to shoot her and deactivate her suit, no matter what caused it.

That's a definite possibility, assuming it isn't something else we've never heard of, and (before the haters jump in) it is possible that Adam is the only one aware of this weakness in her suit, aside from Samus herself, at least outside the Federation laboratory.

It's a good theory, Rinoa, and any theory is better than the lack of explanation we got.

The Hawk's Eye wrote:RinoaFantasy wrote:I dunno, that whole suit deactivation thing reminds me of the "Sit!!!" collar in Inuyasha... That's a better theory than mine...lol And I agree with the script being terribly awkward..I don't think the game would be a quarter as bad as it is if the script was written better. I like Jessica Martin's voice acting...because for the monologues, it makes sense to be monotone. My thoughts sure as hell aren't animated But it would be a better script to work with, it wouldn't have so painful to get through... I always mute it when she says "I'm Samus Aran..what's your name?" WHAT ARE YOU?!?! FIVE!? Oh don't you quadruple me, Hawk! That thought just crossed my mind, thats all!
Maybe I'm an oddball, but I'm on my third playthru and I'm almost at the Queen Metroid and the only times I was like "WTF?!?" was with ...you guessed it... the lava room with no Varia Suit and of course the suit deactivation scene! The game itself is just too good and some of the cutscenes, in my opinion, just aren't so bad. I dunno. I can't call the game "bad". I just can't. I think what's already a fantastic GAME plus a well written story (and not just tolerable as it was for me) would give me a nerdgasm like I've never had before. I think the Ridley scene itself was a good one, just with bad dialogue from Samus. I'm not exactly sure how I would rewrite that scene right now, but I'd have her showing shock and/or frustration instead of fear. I can really only think of three times before that where she battled Ridley. (The Prime games don't count here, and I don't believe that Meta-Ridley and Omega Ridley are the same we encounter in the mainline games.) I think a good old cliche "You'll pay for that!!!" or something like that after Anthony got knocked into the lava would have improved the scene a bit, and maybe afterward she would acknowledge how she froze up and got "killed". Something along those lines. Maybe one day I will take some time to rewrite that scene and/or the suit deactivation one.
