Since Music Discussion Is Allowed Here...

Postby TheFemaleCharlie » 05.18.12 3:14pm

Since this is my first post, allow me to do a quick introduction. My name is Charlie. As my username clearly states, I am a female. I will warn you all now that I am extremely awkward, but otherwise quite amusing to hang with. On a more musical note (no pun intended), I am the first chair Alto Sax at my high school, but I also play piano and I'm learning bassoon, oboe, and marimba. I will say that my two Alto underlings are quite capable, however. The 2nd can play very well, but his horn has less cork than it should, so he ends up sounding rather flat. He usually manages to compensate. The 3rd previously played Tenor, but he does very well at Alto. He and the Tenor and Bari Sax guys played with me in the Spring Concert to a Magmoor Caverns/Lower Norfair (whichever you prefer) piece that I arranged.

Alright, now that I've given some information, let's hear it from you. What do you play or want to play? How good are you? Do you play any Metroid-related music? Are you part of a musical organization (yes, high school and college bands count)? Did you have any concerts recently or are there any upcoming?

I'm only curious and I don't intend to sound nosy, but hey, the conversation has to start somewhere! I'll just shut up now and let you guys do the talking.

First off, welcome to the forums, even if you joined a few days ago (I'M SLOW, SORRY).

Second, onto the topic itself, I don't play any instruments since I probably wouldn't be able to play any of them no matter how many lessons I got (I'm really bad at memorizing stuff), but if I could, I'd probably play the saxophone or bass guitar.

I play french horn, first band in my school, and have a good four or so metroid songs I transposed from piano as well as a very crudely-made medley (I'm planning on taking music theory next year, so hopefully I'll get better at stuff like that :P)

As for what I want to learn to play, I'd like to learn piano and cello. And I do actually have a concert coming up very soon: a duet of Brahms' Scherzo from Serenade in D, Opus 11... whatever that means... but I like scherzos, so it should be fun :D

I played the piano for a very short amount of time. Just got bored, really. (I have the attention span of a two year old :P )

I would like to play the violin.

I play the trumpet at my school band, but I don't really like it any more, it's the kind of instrument where you go big (air wise) or go home.

I'm quitting after this year so...I'll have little skill with it afterwards.

@Azure Dragonius: I didn't expect to be any good either, but then again, I'm good enough at memorizing and applying stuff that I never take notes or study and still make A's and B's.

@doc O. Mire: French Horn? That's a beast of an instrument. I wanted to play it, but brass is something I can't play (I can't buzz haha). As for piano, I was picking out tunes when I was 6, but I couldn't read music until the 6th grade when I actually took piano, and I wasn't taught theory, so I just learned about key signatures and scales last year, and I'm still not entirely sure about all these tempo and dynamic markings. It's not my fault my piano teacher never taught me, but I still feel like an idiot when my director asks about theory. As for your medley, I'd like to hear it, crude or not. My Magmoor Caverns/Lower Norfair arrangement was rather crude as well.

@Zynux and YamI: Maybe you guys should try other instruments. I never would have considered bassoon, but the band needed some bass when the seniors graduated; both our tubas were seniors. I thought about it and when I tried it, I found out I really liked it. My only complaint is my band's lack of maturity and intellect. They act as if they were born yesterday. They are a BAND. THEY SHOULD KNOW WHAT THE HELL A BASSOON IS! But no, they gotta run around going, "The f*** is that, a clarinet?" and I get pissed at their stupidity. Ah, if only stupidity were ALWAYS lethal... :phazon:

It makes you wonder, if stupidity is the ruin of mankind, why hasn't it been bred out? One would think stupidity would be a deterrent to the passing on of one's genes.

I sing, pretty well actually. It just terrifies me sometimes! I was in choir from 5th grade (sooooo long ago!!!) to my senior year in high school. I was in church choir for a couple of years as well. I've dabbled with the piano as well, but I can't really play any instruments. I can however, play a mean CD! (You younguns know what CD's are, right? XD)

And yes, I know what a bassoon is. :) I know most of my musical vocabulary, mostly from choir.

Of course I know what CDs are! I was born before the Internet was. My childhood consisted of my old GameBoy Pocket with Pokemon Yellow Version (both of which I still have), cassette tapes of Billy Gilman (his snake song was amusing), and ALL the VeggieTales! Sadly, the Christian background of VeggieTales didn't carry over; I'm an atheist.

So you were in choir? Were you an alto or soprano? Or something else I don't know the name for?

I used to play drums for a crust punk band and am currently the frontman for a powerviolence/grindcore band. I also enjoy rapping, but I'm not very good at that. It's more something I do when I'm bored.
I'm a sub-par drummer, and all you do in pv bands is make funny voices and yell a lot.

Lawls. Rappers and their silly names. XD

I'm not a fan of rap or screamo but otherwise I'll listen to most anything.

I was just joking about the CD thing...lol I was born a good bit before the internet, 1987 to be precise. :) I'm just a year younger than the original Metroid. As for alto or soprano, I'm actually wide ranged. I've done both. My range is around four octaves, but I'm mostly contralto to mid range. I have a deep voice when I talk. I still sound like a woman, but definitely a grown one. XD

I do not. I've scared multiple people that way. They call and expect me, but are greeted by "some guy". They're like, "Hey, can I talk to Charlie?" and I'm like, "Dude...it's me." I also can't sing worth crap. Of course, when I'm home alone, I don't give a damn, I'll sing if I feel like it.

Ever seen Gabriel Iglesias? Go to YouTube, search "Gabriel Iglesias Drive-Thru Voice" and listen to his epic voice!

I am going to do that with my manly voice. At the McDonald's drive-thru. Alone. On horseback. And I'm gonna order two bottles of water, one for me and one for Stella. Epic trolling.
