Re: Cockatoos and other birds.I own two parakeets, a green, male named Roy and a white, female name Lilith. I've thought of adopting a Congo African Grey just so I have a bird on my shoulder that can fight all my arguments.

Re: Cockatoos and other birds.
I've always wanted to have an African Grey. I love large, smart, talking birds. |

Re: Cockatoos and other birds. We had two parakeets when I was a kid. We started with one. It was nice, but very lonely. It got really made when the plastic parakeet we gave it didn't respond, and kept jumping on it. So we got it a real partner. However, she was evil, and turned him evil too. When you tried to hold her she would bite you on the flap of skin between your thumb and index finger. We left them with some when we moved. At least they were friends at the time.
We later got an african grey. He was crazy smart. He knew his own name and the name of everyone in the family, and would greet people by name. He could also ask for things by name, and would tell you "No!" when he didn't like something. It was easy to teach him tricks, if he did something you just told him what it was called, and after maybe a dozen times he could do it on command, as well as say the trick's name when he did it on his own. He was able to combine words and phrases he had heard to express more complex ideas. So for example he knew "want", and he knew "cherry" (his favorite food), and he knew his own name, so he would say "want cherry". One time my mom was too busy to give it to him, so he said "**bring** (telephone ringing sound). Hello? Sally, shadow want cherry" (my mom's name). He also quickly figured out how his cage lock worked. Luckily the cage was designed such that he physically couldn't open it from inside, but it was clear he could tell how it operated. He was able to open the travel cages we used to take him to the vet and such. Man is the lowest-cost, 150-pound, nonlinear, all-purpose computer system which can be mass-produced by unskilled labor.

Re: Cockatoos and other birds.I had three parakeets growing up. Samson, Jackson, and Delilah. Jackson was a bitch to anyone who wasn't me. She was the only one who learned to mimic sounds, and it was a crunch sound that she picked up from listening to me eat cereal in the morning before school. Samson was a sweetheart. Delilah was kind of dumb.. but I had gotten her to keep Samson company after Jackson died.
Hubby has a 25 year old Senegal parrot who is an evil genius. Waddles can't fly and can barely walk because of his bum leg, but he managed to make my 17 lb cat afraid of him. Waddles screeches a lot and I call him things like "bird nugget" and threaten to cook him for dinner. He can't talk at all, but he seems to have a basic understanding of what we say to him. He tends to hate people until he's had a taste of their blood. |
