What 2D Metroid is Number 1?

Super Metroid is not only THE best 2D Metroid game [IMO], it is THE best 2D game I've ever played.

In order of favorites, I'd probably say the order is:

Super Metroid
Zero Mission
Metroid Fusion
Return of Samus
Metroid

I've never played Return of Samus (it's actually the only one I haven't played besides Prime Pinball) but I heard it was the weakest entry in the series. Is that true?

Far from it. Pinball is the weakest, but it's a spinoff, so that's to be expected.

Don't believe anything you hear until you've actually played it through (like I have), you seem like the guy who doesn't mind a game in black and white and can understand it for what it truly is. (A very good if somewhat linear game)

I'm playing through Super Metroid again and it's my new favorite 2D game.

I know people may think I'm crazy for saying this, and as amazing and flawless as super metroid is, I still have to go with fusion as my favorite 2D game for a few reasons.

1. It had a great story and amazing plot twists.

2. The X parasites were an interesting and largely unnoticed topic in metroid

3. The SA-X sequences were spine chilling and often times gave you a serious adrenaline rush

4. It's a handheld so it's easy to play and share.

The [spoiler]baby metroid saving samus[/spoiler] was by far the most memorable moment in the series, and the only thing that in my opinion could top it would probably be the discovery that Samus' Chozo mentors are still alive, if that ever happens. However, I find myself replaying Fusion more than SM. Although both make it to my top 3.
