General Technology/Engineering Thread

Talk about anything technology and engineering related in this thread. Could be anything from consumer electronics to nuclear fusion.

Solid State Lithium-Ion batteries. You can think of these as next-generation Lithium-Ion batteries. These promise to double or even quadruple the energy density of Lithium-Ion batteries. What makes these batteries special is that they don't use a liquid electrolyte but instead a solid one. It's a totally different way of engineering batteries as you're about to see in the following video:

Interestingly, Dyson tech company has recently acquired Sakti3. Not long ago, Bosch GmbH had acquired Seeo, also a solid state lithium-ion battery tech company like Sakti3. By the looks of things, it's likely that we'll see these types of batteries in our power tools and cordless appliances a few years down the road.

Rumors is going about that Windows 10 will be a mandatory update instead of optional. Make the necessary changes to prevent it if you want to keep the old OS.

Anyone here interested in the Advanced Nuclear Energy field? The reason to add "Advanced" is that we're talking about alternative nuclear reactor technologies that can be more effective at safely producing high volumes of electrical energy. Particularly interesting are nuclear reactors that feed on hazardous nuclear waste. I don't think that involves mining nuclear waste from nuclear waste sites due to how dangerous that sounds but what it could do is take up spent nuclear fuel from conventional nuclear power reactors. This would be something you'll want to place near existing nuclear power plants, giving it easy access to spent nuclear fuel from other reactors.

As for nuclear waste, Cesium and Iodine are the dangerous radio-isotopes that emit dangerous amounts of radiation. In this molten salt reactor, the Cesium and Iodine are locked in the molten salt as Cesium Chloride and Sodium Iodide. The other waste products are radiologically benign substances that is mostly made up of Xenon along with some Krypton, Zirconium Tetrachloride and Cadmium gas.

The first video gives a basic rundown of how this type of molten salt reactor works and how it looks like. The second one gives a more detailed explanation.

Would you consider adding these reactors to your electricity generation mix?

Microsoft has apparently joined the Linux Foundation as a Platinum partner, even though 15 years ago they called Linux "cancer"

What is this liberal/modern arts project? I couldn't tell you but it is the largest traditional 3D printed object
