I actually liked when it turned out to be the Gandrayda boss fight. I was afraid it would be one of those "protect the moron following you around" missions. That wouldn't happen until later...

No no, demolition troopers aren't stupid...infact, they fight better then the scripted cannon fodder.

I don't think Gandrayda is a lesbian, because I don't think it is actually female. Its "glowing lady" is likely an adopted one, that she uses when interacting with humanoids.

She still might have been hitting on Samus. Since she sees other life forms as playthings and likes messing with them in random ways, it would not surprise me at all if she made a habit of sexing other species (regardless of whether or not Gandrayda is an inherently sexual entity). This sort of behavior would fit the "capricious, hedonistic alien superbeing" theme that Gandrayda seems to be based on.

Or she could have just been doing it to creep Samus out. She does like creeping people out and playing jokes, after all. See first cutscene with Admiral Dane.

I suppose some terms lose meaning when you try to apply them to truly alien physiology and cultures. Still, I think Samus is too cool to be bothered by a little flirting, and I am sure Gandrayda knows it.

I would imagine Gandrayda is very curious and experimental....When you can take nearly any form one can imagine, why be limited to one sexual prefrence? :D

So you claim that the glowy woman is not her real form(if she even has an original)? It's possible...But I imagine other Jovians look just like Gandrayda, except with diffrent physiques and the same glowyness and transparency, but diffrent vibrant colors. If their this weird, I wonder what their planet looks like! :)

Maybe they have no original form, but just imitate glowy humanoids to maintain a somewhat uniform appearance.

Jovian? Wait, where does it say she’s Jovian? I thought her species and origin were unknown.

Yeah, her shapeshifting ability is similar to that of the Jovians, but it explicitly says that she is not one of them.

I also am guessing that her powers are greater than the Jovians'. If they were all that good at shapeshifting, they'd have taken over the Galaxy by now.

Of course, that's assuming that the Jovians are sentient. The "indiginous life forms" of Jovia could just be shapeshifting animals.

Oh.

Okay, well, that's what her species would look like. Sorry, I just heard about the jovians in canon and assumed Gandrayda was one of them.

You know, that thought has occured to me as well. I dismissed it immediately (since her method of shapeshifting seems to have little to do with theirs, not to mention no amoeba things flew out when she died), but it did occur to me.

It is possible that Jovia is a colony of Gandrayda's species. This would explain her similarity to them without her neccesarily being from that planet.

Samus' Character

Postby MrGone » 02.11.08 5:15am

New here. Didn't read all of the posts (sorry, just wanted to comment on the original topic).

ZSS. Love her or hate her, she's part of the Metroid canon at this point.

And by the way, for those of you who don't want to hear Samus talk, don't play brawl, in at least two of Zero Suit Samus' taunts, she utters some, well, taunts. I played an imported copy the other day with some friends (also, great game!) and can confirm this. At least they have Jennifer Hale as her VA. She sounds like Samus ought to.

Personally, I agree to a degree that Samus loses something when she gets out of the armor and gets all "teh s3Xy". But at the same time, I think it's necessary for a couple of reasons:

1) In order to get more Metroid games made, Metroid needs to become more popular, especially in Japan (since Nintendo thinks of the Japanese audience first when it comes to pretty much everything). I think after such a long time of taking the high road and not revealing much of the inherent sexuality of the character, Nintendo has decided to try a new tact. If this makes Samus more popular though, guess what? We'll get more games. And that fellow hunters, is a good thing.

2) In order to ever delve a bit more deeply into the character of Samus Aran, they're going to need a character model for what she looks like outside of the powersuit. And they need one that is CONSISTENT. Until Zero Mission, no attempt was made at consistency with Samus' out of suit character design. She was drawn as buff, skinny, and in between. With Green, purple, brown, blonde, and platinum hair. And in several different types of clothing or gear. Nothings been consistent. The Zero Suit has now been featured in several games as Samus' main out of suit look, and with that, they can really start doing new things with the series (main example is Zero mission itself where the entire gameplay style is different when she's in the ZS). This again, is a good thing.

Also, I see no reason why she can't be sexy as hell AND tough as nails. A good example of this:

Any of you watch Lost? If you do, look at the character of Kate. She's strikingly beautiful, but there's a definite edge to her character, and so far she's been one of the most battle ready characters on the show (watch out for her elbow). Though her story is inherently different from Samus' (she's a fugitive, whose main dilemma is one of morality and courage) she possesses some of the traits of a solid heroine that I feel Samus could possess if put in capable hands.

As for Gandrayda's sexual preferences . . . as far as I understand it, she could only be into necrophilia at this point. I seem to remember killing here a while back . . .

"Omfg ZSS is whor! y r Samuz tlkin?! she r suppozed 2 b queit! wtf o grate nao mtroid is ruind. damit nubz."

First, just because ZSS is revealed, she doesn't have to appear constantly in canon metroid games. If anything, they will maintain the tradition of showing her at the end of the game, or at most playing as her temporarily, such as in Zero mission. It should also be noted that people seem to have forgotten Justin Bailey.

Second, Samus talks alot in the 2d games...In the intro of Super Metroid and throughout Fusion...The fact that she has a FEW lines in a non-canon game should not be of consequence.

In summary, get over it people.

IMO, the Fusion dialogue really sucked major balls.

Samus talking at the beginning of Super Metroid worked well because it was a narrative. We have rarely seen Samus talking in dialogue until fairly recently. I've never really minded Samus monologuing but taunting just doesn't seem like her style to me - I'd think that she'd be above that.

A few reasons Samus probably wears such "skimpy" outfits is because, like Road says, she probably has no real sense of Shame. She would wear what she finds comfortable, that'd be all that really matters to her. Also, as Samus's powersuit is an extension of her body, (and I believe I'm taking this straight from a fan fiction) the more skin she has in contact with it while wearing it, the better she can interact with it. So 'skimpy' outfits are of a benefit to her.

I personally think the Zero-Suit is a nice idea (not the sex-symbol side of it though) For her to be wearing a stylish body suit-thing underneath her armour rather than just some random bikini etc.

I think of Samus as someone who talks, but isn't much for small talk. On missions, she'll listen, but she isn't one to say "Ok", she feels no need. At the same time, on a day in the city, she'll talk to people she knows, maybe watch a movie, etc. She isn't going up to random strangers, but she isn't some uber anti-social jerk, she's a kind, caring person. She isn't one to go around making friends, nor is she averse to the idea, but the friends she does make, she treats as any other person would: Respect, kindness, and forgiveness.
She likes her work, and she has no problem with lonelyness, but at the same time, she's perfectly fine with company. She doesn't dislike that she's human, she's fine with her impulses and urges, she never really ponders their nature.

That's how I see Samus, and this is gleaned entirely from her body language and words.

So, what can I imply about Samus's personality from what I've seen?

For one thing, Samus is not the kind of woman who would ever believe in "destiny". Despite the texts foreseeing her arrival on Tallon IV, the only reason Samus had to even go there was because of a routine mission that turned into a fight for the planet. Same thing with Aether, in that it was only a rescue mission at first. In both cases, after learning more about the distresses on the planet, Samus feels obligated to save the world, just for the sake of doing so.

Samus only fights not because she's someone's "Defender", but because she feels she has to do something to stop evil and injustice. She's just an independent woman who wants to bring peace in space in her own way, and not the way of others.
:metroid: = Ultimate Warrior

Therefore, 8) = :metroid:

Now you know why they call it Metroid.
