Oh my gosh... it's BEAUTIFUL! I love the art so much! I just wish I could read it.

The impression I get is that the pirates created their own Samus, in a way, perhaps by abducting a human child and raising her like the chozo raised Samus, but without the loving familial relationships. And perhaps they have clones?

And then Sylux... obviously working with the pirates, it looks like as some sort of research officer?

Sometimes the action is hard to read, but the way it was COLORED... Good night. Was that water color, gouache, or some form of digital coloring? Markers, maybe?

Where did you guys FIND this?

This is a Metroid doujin entitled 'Pirates'. Doujin is any Japanese fan-made work that is not licensed. We're not sure who made it, but the art is excellent! It's about the adventures of Samus and Weevil, who in this manga is a girl.

Funny, though. I always thought Sylux would be involved with a different organization (of course, he might just be a double agent). Again, a translation would be nice.

A translation would be cool, but they take time and there is still plenty of official manga that most of us would like to have available first.

MaiAri, I found it while on a big search I made a few weeks back on Metroid doujins. I knew there were a few out there (and there is even another one that is just as beautifully colored but I can't find it ) and I finally was able to track a couple down. This one is definitely the less-pornographic of the two, so we were able to host it on the site.

The whole thing is definitely digitally colored. Most likely it was done in an app called Painter, in which the sole premise of the app is to replicate classic art techniques by making everything "work" like the real thing. You have a brush, you can have different canvases and textures, brush strokes, etc...

Sylux was never given a character in Hunters. He can be interpreted however you like.

Agreed, but I don't think she was intentionally "showing off." The artist may have been. ><; Also, I would guess the writer is aware of the facts, but disregarded canon in favor of an interesting story, probably one that they came up with before being aware of the facts. Perhaps.

Well, I think it looks interesting. Like I said before, it appears the pirates tried to create their own Samus, Sylux acting as some sort of accomplice. Samus tries to save the poor dear, who appears to have been brainwashed or is under some sort of mind control, but Sylux and Ridley activate a self destruct in the girl's suit in an effort to kill Samus and keep their creation from escaping. It looks like they have some clones in reserve, though it could've been a flashback.

Sounds cool to me! And the characterizations look well done, especially on the part of Ridley- all creepy and evil and munching on animals.

I suppose it all comes down to personal taste.

Well, I've only read a few words on the first page, and it sounds like Weavel is characterized as another orphan who wants to be free and independent like Samus. But my interest in translating it isn't that high because it's not official and so I don't think it's going to tell us anything new.

Well, I'm taking a japanese class now, and learning some hiragana, so maybe one day I can translate it.

But don't count on that- goodness knows how long till I'll be able to properly translate romaji.

I'm sure you meant romanji and I know a few people who have only a couple years of japanese language study and they do translations rather well. Usually if you have a grasp of the basics and a good english/japanese dictionary you do pretty well. Hiragana and furigana are the easiest to learn from my understanding (though I don't know squat about the Japanese language beyone what I can say in my limited vocabulary).

Depends on whom you ask, but I think the Japanese generally refer to it as rōmaji, which is the way I usually see it in a translation context. I think the usage of “romanji” arose because it rhymes with kanji... hmmm... Wikipedia calls “romanji” incorrect, but no source is provided for the statment, and I was told “romanji” when I studied some basic Japnee in 6th grade.

We're being tought by students from Japan. I think in class they used "romaji." I thought it might be "romanji" because it's "romanized"- using roman/english letters? But they definitely said romaji.

The alphabets they mentioned were hiragana, katakana, and kanji. *looks up furigana* Sooo... furigana is just superscripted hiragana used to help pronounce kanji? Is it actually pronounced "fu"? Or is it really "hu"? In our aplhabet, under the characters beginning with H there's a "fu" but it's pronounced "hu." Our instructors thought that was really weird. XD It makes a lot more sense with all those scanlations, they're going "hoo hoo hoo..." not FUFUFUFUFU!!11!

I do know furigana with hiragana is one of the simplest forms of translation to start with. Most manga scanlation groups start new translators on these types of manga (like metroid, doubt, or various new ones). More experienced translators get the more difficult kanji, katakana translations. To my knowledge anyway....
