Look at the pics I drew in here, I rarely shade.
I'm left-handed, and I prefer doing the shading at the "far side", using the light on the top left, its much easier...

He did massacre a large amount of the goomba population.

Lots of southpaws over here. I know it really doesn't make sense (and probably leads to more smudging) to have the light at the top-left, but I just like it that way.

I like that lady, EI! She looks like she has a lot of character. I'd want to sit down and listen to her. What's her name??
I don't know if this is the sort of thing you were looking for, purple, but here's an image of a smokey quartz crystal. If you do a google search, I'll be you can find a lot more other references.
Recently I also found this super awesome site called posemaniacs. Its a collection of skinless figures in various poses for artists to use as a reference, especially for muscle groups and such. The window is a flash application, and allows you to rotate the figures. It also has some really neat applications, like gesture drawing practice and something called negative space drawing. It's a great resource for anyone learning to draw the human anatomy.
I want to do the gesture practice soon- right now I take longer than I'd like drawing a properly apportioned figure.
edit: Also, thanks for the compliment, Sylux. That's very high praise... X3

Oh, that's awesome! Thanks for the link. I've been meaning to redesign the Varia suit around a correctly proportioned Samus (to make up for the terror Retro gave us), but I can't draw correctly proportioned people unfortunately

Hey redwing, that shading technique I asked about? I used it in this drawing.
Like I said, many thanks.

I don't know. I just felt like I needed more practice on drawing the female body, but I didn't want to make it look like a piece of jail-bait. So I went for dignified older lady. I guess whatever regal-sounding name you like, it's hers.
Oh, and here's probably an eventual fan-art submission:

I got an old webcam but don't have a microphone, so I thought this would be a good use for it. A look at how I draw Samus. Admittedly, it's not my best work. I would have used more detail but I was a) using (cheap) ballpoint pen and b) the camera couldn't capture that detail if it tried.
She does look more like the walking tank she is, though.
