Re: Spam BotsDamn robots. How about selecting the missing piece of a picture?

Re: Spam Botseven better. put a picture of a metroid and then as them what it is. And sorry to keep derailing this topic.

Re: Spam Bots
Even better, put a picture of everything but a Metroid, and ask them what it's not. Sorry, mods. But hey, a picture capcha wouldn't be that bad to stop these bots. They seem to be more prevalent now. |

Re: Spam BotsI've been seriously considering that approach, and in fact people are beginning to formulate it for phpbb3. As of now, the developers are still convinced that 3 is bullet proof when in fact, it ain't.
It's very convoluted, mostly undocumented code and so the effort that would go into hacking something in is just way more of a commitment and frustration than I'm willing to deal with. But with time... we'll get something. -Jesse D

^ I caught my first spambot, hurray! Someone will stumble upon it anyway. Warning: Peeling off this signature will void your warranty

Re: Spam BotsThis yj1tm2pl3 fellow is most certainly a spam bot. I'd delete his account now.
EDIT: Oops, sorry, didn't notice that I'm a bit late. ![]()

Re: Spam BotsFYI, some of these spam bots have been alt accounts created by Red Mage trying to get back on. He feels vengeful for being exiled for his past deeds and so sometimes tries to post spam and other nonsense. He's doing such a great job of rebuilding his 'good name.' It only takes us about two seconds to fix things like this now that the admin panel has been updated. We should be seeing VERY few spambots now as there is now admin approval required for new accounts to be activated, and only requires one or two clicks. We get so few new actual users that it's not that much work!

Re: Spam BotsThis thread reminds me a little bit of the Committee of Un-American Activties.
As such, it should be renamed to "The Committee of Un-Metroid Activities" Spy on your neighbors, kids! It's good for the site!

Re: Spam BotsCan I just ask, what are all the bots that are marked as registered users at the bottom of the index page:
For example: Google [Bot] Yahoo [Bot] and so on... I am confused, are these spammers or what... |
|
Re: Spam Bots
those are search engine indexing bots. The ones from the search engines are harmless. You can read up on them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_bot "I authorize full use of the Report Button on the MDb Message Boards." |
