Amazing Metroid Stuff thread

Postby Kun Hitori » 08.14.07 11:23pm

ADMIN EDIT: Since this thread is no longer about amazing Scratch-Built Samus figures, I decided to give it a more appropriate subject title.

Hey all.
A quick introduction since I don't want to bother with a thread-

I've been browsing the MDB message board for several years now. You guys may not know me, but I know most of you. I accessed the board through my brother's account, but never posted with it since it wasn't my own (had one LOOONG ago, forgot the login data :/).

Of course, I loves me some Metroid. I mean I REALLY loves me some Metroid. Been a fan since playing Metroid 1 on the NES back in the...NES...days. ...
Played every game, love 'em all. Got lot's of merchandise, drawn fan artwork, obsessive media archiving, ETC.

So, yeah. OK.[/color]

I was scoping coverage of the Japanese garage-kit & licensed product display event, Wonder Festival 2007, drooling a- I mean, uh, admiring all the awesome new products from some of my favorite licensed properties (the show-stealing Revoltech Rei Ayanami, mecha stuff GALORE). I was browsing a gallery of shots of random pieces from the show floor when lo and behold, look at what I found!

A scratch-built samus figure! Ah-hhHHHH!

So much want is that me to is.

I did some digging, & managed to find this page with several in-progress shots the whole page down-

As I understand it, often times a really well made figure/kit/statue/whatever will be produced in limited quantities by an amateur group, or sometimes even picked up & produced by a major manufacturer. Are you hoping what I'm hoping?

I'd let that crouch in the corner of my desk. :3 Even if the proportions look kind of funny. VERY cool.

edit: Whoa whoa wait. She's POSEABLE?! *dies* That took some time thar.

Here-

@nifty translation

That's about as good as it's going to get. :\

Well, yeah. The guy that made it sculpted her face in/on the helmet. I'm assuming a transparent visor piece will go on over it later.

HOLY FREAKIN' SHIT! That is absolutely *tear jerkingly* amazing.
I am a HUGE fan of Garage kits. I have built several myself. Yes, if mass produced into resin, I would buy this in a heartbeat. It runs circles around the F4F ones, of course. That is godlike. And yes, the face IS carved in there, to make room for a translucent piece of plastic where her visor sits.... What an incredibly awesome find! Thank you, Kun!

I REALLY hope the guy who made this makes a ZS Samus too...the F4F one is just plain ugly.

Hahaha... Infinity, that's because the Zero Suit Samus IS ugly. At least in my opinion, which really doesn't count for much anywhere...

I do believe I speak for many when I say-

Though I do prefer articulation.

When ARE we going to get some decent, articulated Metroid figures...

it's a perfect example of US vs. Japan, Kun. We get the realistic, more caucasian looking Samus, and they get the anime-ish looking one. I must admit the suited Samus ones that F4F made look pretty decent, but for the price it's definitely not worth it. (don't get me started on that FUGLY looking OOT Link...)

Both of those ZS samus's don't look all that hot, but i guess you give and take. I do think that the wonderful artists who carve garage kits for a living would probably make ZS Samus look dead-on perfect to the SSBB model... who knows if that'll ever happen though.

Hm. Honestly I prefer the second -- while it's comparatively off-model for Samus, it's a much better piece of sculpture. The first one is ropey and ill-proportioned in ways that have nothing to do with the intended style.

That may be, but I'll take ropey & ill-proportioned for ~$20 over plain & yarn-haired for $110 any day of the week. =P

Ouch. I think they're both overpriced.
