Okay....so my wife's scanlation group is looking at scanlating the Metroid manga, the one under the MZM section
They are looking at plausible scanlating the Metroid manga; however, I need to get at least the first chapter to them. Will the MDB have any problems with me saving these pictures from the MZM Manga section to forward on to them?
If not, that's great, they will determine if they want to work it from there.
Secondly, if they do decide to scanlate it, does anyone actually physically own this manga? If they work it, they will probably want EXTREME high quality scans (talking like 4000 in height type thing.) to be able to clean/translate the pages (they are very proud of the high quality work they do)
Let me know so I can try to get the ball rolling. Y'all will be really pleased if this does happen to go through but I need to know!

Well, not sure what all entails with scanlation...but the only guy I know who has the manga is Samethard. If you want your own copy, it will run you around $70 after shipping - for two volumes.
As I said earlier, the MZM manga is 'open-source' so anyone can take the pics and do whatever they want with them. I figure all people want are cool images of stuff, which is a big reason why we haven't been putting so many watermarks on everything lately (that and it's a shame to ruin such a nice picture). And actually, according to the laws of redundancy, the more copies people download, the longer this thing will be around in digital form!

Well I got the first chapter saved.
The basic process goes
1. Wife Cleans up the scans (gets rid of excess scan marks and fixes any contrast issues. She also seperate the pages that are doubled up.
2. The cleaned scans then go to the translator. This person reads the text and translates it into English. They type up the script in word/notepad and send it back to my wife who then goes and replaces the Japanese text in the cleaned scans with the English version.
This sometimes includes sound effects sometimes not.
Once completed it will be either posted on there site and a link provided to bittorrent or download them for viewing. They will be in jpeg format and viewable in a viewer like Irfanview (what I use anyway).
So my wife has the first chapter. She'll clean it up and send it on up to her "in charge" guy to determine if they will do it. If so, I will continue to send them the chapters and all will be good ^_^.
If not, oh well I tried they got a few projects going on but I'm sure my wife can convince them to do it

Sounds like a pretty detailed process.
Bear in mind that the first two volumes have already been translated, so I don't see much need in translating them again (unless too many inconsistencies are found).
I intend to have zipped collections of the manga available online (.cbr format actually, so they can be read by Comic Book Reader - but you can always rename the file to .zip), but first Fileplanet needs to fix the FTP problems they're giving everybody so I can upload new stuff to the site - it is impossible for us to store and transfer such large files from Classicgaming.

Actually not as hard as it sounds.
I informed the wife that the first two were already done, but regardless, she told me they do them all. They will be able to post the entire collection for others who don't frequent the MDB to get the entire series without searching the world for it.

sharonlover, does your wife's fan-translation group have their own website? If so, what is it?

per my wifes instructions, I have not been permitted to release that information until they have decided yes or no as to whether or not they will translate the manga (I have no idea why )
I can tell you that they do a lot of scanlations. They are mostly known for there work on Yuu Watase manga (Fushigi Yuugi, Alice 19th, Imadoki, ect..ect).
you can go out to www.mangaupdates.com and search out *cough*snoopycool* and find out...but you didn't get no tips from me

Well, make sure you let your wife and her group know that they are doing an extremely high-demand service for the Metroid fan-community if this actually pulls through. We are working on making a manga-viewer for you guys, and possibly all of the comics on the site will end up being viewable this way, so it's gonna be really awesome in the end!

I think there are just three volumes. I don't know anyone who has no. 3. However, there is also the Super Metroid manga and a Metroid Prime 2 manga to consider (as well as that Samus and Jimmy manga that we don't have...yet).

I have the jimmy set packed up somewhere and could get that for scanning, IF they wanted to do that one to. I'm not pressing my luck with that yet, I'll wait to see if they do this one first
Once they do that one, then we'll see about the others. I'm not familiar with the Super Metroid manga??? Or do you mean the 4 panel comics found in the Capcom book, if so I've got that one too!

Yeah, that's Samus and Jimmy. I've been meaning to buy that, but I've been a bit tight on cash lately, and buying a manga I've never seen that appears to be of questionable quality isn't on the list. If you can provide us with some quality scans, the MDb would be much obliged. If it looks interesting, we can do a translation request, but the scans are definitely something I've been wanting to put up for awhile.
The Super Metroid manga is the one from the 'Capcom Book' (Shounen Oh!) and is already available on the MDb. Oddly enough, the only thing that seems to be missing is the front and back cover, as the back has some color Samus art.

Please excuse the placement of this, I wasn't too certain where to put it...
I was wondering some things about the localization involved in the scanlation, if it takes place. For example, will the people involved be familliar with the series? I'd prefer that, in another example, Samus's name is the English version, as opposed to a direct translation that might end up something like Samusu. That kind of attention is something I hope to be given even to minor characters and settings like Adam or K-2L.
Maybe, if possible, it could be reviewed by the MDB board and possibly some other Metroid boards to check for continuity and such before the "done" stamp gets placed on. That way, it could get those small little details that we all love so much to help keep the feeling of the Metroid Universe. One such suggestion that I will propose now is that the Chozo might keep the Japanese honorifics used when speaking amongst themselves, similarly to how "Old Bird" did with Samus in the Super Metroid comic, since much continuity from it was used in the manga. (Not to mention recent games...)
