Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?Wow that is seriously the coolest thing I have seen all day. I really want a metroid tattoo, but I'm too afraid of the permanence. I have the logo of a band tattooed on my back, but I got it 20 years ago when I was 16 and I really don't like that band nearly as much as I used to. I'm afraid that if I get a 'troid tattoo that I will regret it when I'm 60.

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?
It just depends on how much you like tattoos. I love them. I do them. If that band was an influence on your life and it still looks legible you should be happy with the tattoo. Because just like the tattoo, that influence will never change. That's that great weight of tattooing... Super Metroid was a massive influence in my style and taste, as you can see.. Just make sure you get someone who will make it right. Check out portfolios. And for God's sake, don't compromise and get something small just because you're scared. Ask yourself these questions: Do you like color, or black and grey shading? Do you want a cool, stand-alone souvenir or deeply worked body art? The real difference here is size and coverage. Goodluck. Edit: Keep in mind that the smaller you get anything the less negative space you have between lines 20 years from now. Ink will always spread a certain amount over a given time, and if two lines spread 1/16" each side of a 1/4" space over 30 years the gap closes down to half it's size. Letters .25" tall, for instance, will never survive that. However if that space is 2" to begin with between those two same lines, the new proportional amount of loss is negligible. Bigger is... always better. Last edited by Gearphyr on 07.21.10 3:22pm, edited 1 time in total.

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo? If I ever did get one, it wouldn't be a small one. The aforementioned tattoo is the only one I have. I didn't get more because I always thought it looked really tacky when someone had a whole bunch of unrelated tattoos everywhere - almost like a suitcase that has been around the world twice. I would want a very large tattoo that followed the same theme, and would somehow have to swallow or otherwise incorporate the existing Skinny Puppy tattoo. I would love to get one that has flowers, vines, butterflies, and hummingbirds in a large collage that covered my entire back and wrapped around on my shoulders, going partway down each arm. 20 years ago the inks seemed to be less bright, but that doesnt seem to be the case anymore.
As far as choosing metroid as the theme - I'm worried about having the problem that I do with my current tattoo. I'm tired of people asking me what it is because when I tell them they are like - 'Oh.' People who are familiar with that band kinda think I'm crazy when they see that tattoo because the music is fucking weird. It's good stuff, but it's totally sick drug music and I so don't party like that anymore. ![]() |

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?
Skinny Puppy? You sir, are my friend. I almost wore my SP shirt today. Yea, the patchwork quilt people have trouble grasping what it means to get a large tattoo. Yes, Inks have improved a tremendous amount. Your tattoo may very likely be Pelican drawing ink. You'll always have people ask about your tattoos. I'm used to it. Heres the key though... if something is done right, punches you in the face, and really moves the viewer's eye around, in and out... then what it ACTUALLY is is only an afterthought for everyone. It doesn't matter, because it looks good. "What the hell!? There's an eye in its mouth! It looks real." All the time. Hardly ever do I have to explain it. And when I do, I just say "94, Super Nintendo." You've had to explain a symbol of drugs, death, and music to strangers for 20 years. Throw your jadedness away. |

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?Absolutely awesome design, gearphyr! Reaching the statue room in Super for the first time was one of those subtly surreal moments in the game and I always loved the design of it. Though I'm not really a tattoo person, I still admire great artistry, and that definitely qualifies.

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?Ah yes, the old statue room in SM. The first time I went in there, I was afraid it'd stand up and eat me.
You, sir, are absolute pure win in its purest form. ![]() |

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?
Yea, that's me standing there. I'll be sure to do that.
Thanks. I've been working on the design and positions of it all this year. I pretty much drew it up.. then gave it to an artist I like alot. He does really dark, grotesque stuff. Perfect for this, right? I told him to interpret my sketch as he saw fit. He basically followed it, except for a few exceptions which I liked and ok'd. The position and size of the horns and tentacles on the bottom of Phantoon, and the faces on Draygon's head for instance. Outline for Kraid is next... I'm thinking I'm gonna crop him up, putting him the right place but making him... you know.. to SCALE. I'm tempted to give him nipples. lol. |
|
Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?
Looking forward to Kraid, but nipples wouldn't be a good idea... nipples would imply that he's mammalian, when he is clearly reptilian...ish. |
|
Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?Yeah I have to agree about the nipples. Reptilian, mammalian, whatever - I just think nipples would look lame on Kraid. Besides, where would they be, exactly? He kinda has spikes on his forward torso/abdomen already.

Re: Anyone out there with a Metroid tattoo?Isn't it enough we have to see your nipples?
Don't be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.
