SuperMetroid: --I fail at leaping! Help! ;w;

Postby -ChozoChild- » 08.03.10 11:38pm

Ok, so I have the ice missile and all the other goodies and I'm on my way to Norfair to fight Crocomire but I'm having trouble crossing over the water. You have to make this huge leap-- and I keep failing at it-- the water slows Samus down and I can't seem to get enough power to leap across. I tried morfball bombing in the water near the platform but it doesn't seem to work. I was thinking that maybe shine-sparking might work but I don't have enough room. Help?

I'll keep trying but if there is a method of doing it then that's great.

It just requires a running jump. Run and jump at the top "step", and don't let go of either the joypad or the run button while you do it.

(Like the "noob bridge", this is another case where Super Metroid's room design is deliberately pedagogical -- running jumps, if not essential, at least become very helpful later on; they are making you learn the maneuver up front.)

That part still trips me up.

It just feels sometimes like the jump I press is delayed in the game.

Have you tried turning off your high jump boots. The area you are in is extremely easy to cross at the very beginning of the game...mostly because you don't hit your head on the ceiling when you jump. Try that.

Yeah, it's weird how I never finished SM either. I've even learned how to wall jump, mockball and shinespark prefectly, but I guess I never got the inspiration to actually play it through. z:P

I didn't play and beat Super Metroid until a year ago, until I had finished every other Metroid game (sans MII).

Without the High Jump boots, it's easier to stand on the "step" with your feet in the water. Do a long spin jump and you'll make it.

With the boots, it's actually possible to wall jump up onto the platform, the only risk being that you'll overshoot and land in the spikes and get Skree'd.

Here's a crappy YouTube video demonstrating both, and I apologise for the quality, but I edited the movie in Windows Live Movie Maker.

Incidentally, It's not possible (Or at least very difficult) to wall jump up onto the platform without the High Jump boots. You won't get enough height to clear the water and gain enough momentum to jump clear of the water. Not that it matters since the jump is easier to make without them.

Thank you everyone! I made the leap!

I'll keep all of this in mind next time I play through in that area. Thank you again.

You might want to consider assigning the 'dash' button to either L or R. This makes it easy to hold the button down throughout the entire game.

For fuck's sake why did I never think of that.

Jesus I've been straining my fingers awkwardly this whole time.

I suggest using a controller that has 4 shoulder buttons so that you dont have to sacrifice aiming diagonally up or down. Download the 'control freak' patch located on the main site for even more options.

I've never had a problem holding down speedrun the whole game. I guess to me it's second nature, given how much time I've played Mario and Metroid both. Keeping my thumb on the run button is as neutral a position as I can think of with the nes, snes, and classic controllers.

Well, all I have is a Gamecube controller, so I found that losing the ability to aim down AS WELL AS the ability to easily scan with the XRay visor to be too much against the ease of dashing with the L button.
