Damn, Hunters is just missing the Metroids. But technically, so is Metroid Prime 3 Corruption since there are no enemies specifically named "Metroid". And Metroid II RoS has got to be a failed Metroid game since it has no Space Pirates. How unfortunate. Well shoot, you put in the "etc" in there too so I can't be certain that any game released for the series is a "Metroid" game. Because EVERY "Metroid" game needs to have the aspects of what made EVERY past "Metroid" game fun, and "etc" is a pretty broad word choice.
Kind of have to agree with IUniverse here. Besides that, I still consider Hunters a Metroid game. I think we should support new ideas in the series... as fun as the "Metroid Formula" is, I'm all for different concepts. Maybe Hunters wasn't the most stellar example, but we shouldn't be so quick to shoot down everything that's not "Metroid". I, for one, would love to see a Battlefront-style Metroid war game. But that doesn't have bosses, per se, and probably not very many interesting upgrades... and so on. Why limit ourselves? Just because Hunters isn't an amazing game doesn't mean we have to throw it out in the cold

I never thought the lack of metroids was too big of a deal, and it did have those wierd quadtroids.(Possibly indicating Chozo/Alimbic interaction revolving around the metroids? But why are they called quadtroids if they have three legs?) At first I was dissappointed at the lack of 'normal' metroids in Prime 3, but in the end I'm glad they did it that way. The metroids were never a big part of the Prime series, just included as recognition of the original series. This shows that ALL metroids used by the space pirates had joined the ranks of Phazon's army, and the metroids as a whole now bow before the new threat. It also makes sense that the pirates need metroid DNA really badly in Super Metroid. What if all the Space Pirate cloned metroids died of Phazon withdrawal? It's the pirate's chief source of power, maybe metroids weren't used primarily as weapons. Just another theory. I consider it a Metroid game as well, but I was dissappointed in the way it turned the standard upgrade layout into just a new weapons thing. Hunters did something totally new for the series, like Quake Wars is to Quake and Halo Wars is to Halo. (Metroid Prime Wars sounded way too cheezy) I'd like to see a Battlefront, Halo, or whichever else FPS you like styled game about the Federation's war effort. But it wouldn't even have to be Metroid. They could integrate it into the story without calling it anything with Metroid in the name. Just look at how much of a success Valve's Portal was, and if not told so it would've taken me until I found the few hidden easter eggs to figure out Portal was a Half Life game.

How... How could you guys hate this game? It's great - nay, amazing! It has great graphics, sound, awesome levels, and adrenaline-pumping bosses and encounters, as well as escapes! It stays true enough to the roots! It's difficult, you need to explore, and you've got the perfect mix of isolation and fear as you worry for what you may encounter in the next corridor. The only thing off is that it doesn't feel like the other Primes and the controls are iffy, but, this game is great! And, dear god, the cutscenes? Amazing!
What is it you guys hate so much about this game?

You know, if this was a joke post, I'd say well done.
Because your post describes everything Hunters is NOT.
As well, there are other topics talking about Hunters.

The Hunters are bland, the graphics are moderate (Yet it is good for a DS game) The bosses are basically improved versions of each other. The music is alright. Plus, there's not really that much exploration. That's my perspective.

When I said the graphics were good, yeah, I did mean "good compared other DS games". When saw Prime 1's graphics, we were amazed, because they were great when compared to the others on the Gamecube, but complete crap when compared with graphics on other consoles. Also, it seems that the only other recent topic that touched up on this topic (how much Hunters sucked/didn't suck) was locked due to a flamewar going on.

Yes, the graphics are fantastic, and remain true to the Metroid Prime style. It certainly is one of the best examples full 3D I've seen on the DS. But... and adrenaline-pumping bosses and encounters, as well as escapes! It stays true enough to the roots!
This was where I drew the line. The uninspired and copy/paste boss encounters were a major disappointment, and the escape sequences just flat out didn't make any sense. What are you running from? Why does Samus' ship casually float away from the planet after you escape? (Rather than haul ass.) Why can you just park your ship right back down on the same planet without any trouble? The only thing off is that it doesn't feel like the other Primes and the controls are iffy, but, this game is great! And, dear god, the cutscenes? Amazing!
Yeah, it wasn't developed by the Retro team so it does have some differences. The controls are cramp-tastic, sadly. And the custcenes... aside from being recycled a few times, they were great. The rendition of ZSS is one of the most beautiful I've seen. But ultimately, it just doesn't feel like Metroid for me. Even the morph ball sequences were frustrating. The whole experience felt bland and generic to me, like Quake 2 or something. There's just nothing that compels me to ever want to play it again. I don't think Hunters by itself is an awful game, but it's not worthy of being called "Metroid" in my opinion.

I should've worded myself differently there; I think I might've posted too fast . I didn't mean that the escapes and bosses stay true to the roots. When I said it stays true to the roots I meant "It's difficult, you need to explore, and you've got the perfect mix of isolation and fear as you worry for what you may encounter in the next corridor". I agree, the escapes make absolutely no sense. When you die, it says "Planetary Security Sequence activated" and then you just kinda explode (if you're in the morph ball) and whatever you're fighting is still living. They couldn't even offer a decent explanation, like... An EMP blast that wipes out your suit and then you're eaten alive by the non-robotic enemies. Seriously, I thought that up in 20 seconds and they couldn't think it up in the months (years?) they spent developing this?

The fan-theory with the octolith being booby-trapped so that you have to take it back to your ship to disarm it was the best justification I've heard so far, but alas the "Planetary Security System" text argues against it. Really, there were a lot of lazy decisions in Hunters, from re-using the same two boss designs over and over, to re-using the same music over and over (yes, using the same song and adding different tracks to make different hunter "themes" was clever, but...), to stuff like this.

You mean Hunters? Naw, it's not that bad. You just can't think of it as a PURE Metroid game. It has more in common with the more common FPSes, just with a Metroid flair. It's still enjoyable, if only in the multiplayer. ... Wait, you realize this thread is ancient, right?

There was another thread about this but they got yelled at and said there is already a topic about this with a link to this one, sorry. I don't like common FPSs, so that's why I wouldn't like it.

Oh, sorry. I hate it when people do that. I don't like common FPSs, so that's why I wouldn't like it.
Oh, I see. You probably made the right choice.
